"Those Who Hear" Takes Fresh Voices '17-18 Top Honors

Jerome Velinsky smallHOLLYWOOD, CA. April 9, 2018   Australian native, Jerome Velinsky, took the Grand Prize Award of the 8th Annual Fresh Voices Screenplay Competition this week for his dramatic thriller, THOSE WHO HEAR. The screenplay also won the Spotlight Award for Best Role Written for a Female Lead.

Jerome is an award-winning writer/ director/ actor from Melbourne, Australia. As a professionally trained actor, he has appeared in productions in the US, Australia and Canada including the long-running hit series Neighbors and Fox’s Backstrom. He has also appeared in feature films alongside Guy Pearce, Miranda Otto and Sam Neill in the controversial true story In Her Skin and portrayed the notorious 'Marco Capobianco' in Season 4 of Australia's leading drama series Love Child. Most recently, Jerome co-created, produced, directed and starred in the comedy series Method, for which he has just been nominated for a 2018 Australian Directors Guild Award for best online series.

As a writer, Jerome’s first screenplay Stage Four, was awarded Silver Prize (Horror/ Thriller) in the 2017 Page Screenwriting Awards. Those Who Hear, his second script, is now garnering attention and gaining Jerome a reputation as a versatile writer known for his ability to craft dialogue that is truthful, fluid and powerful, as well as his capacity to focus on female-driven characters with depth and understanding.

Based on true events, Those Who Hear is a memorable thriller that explores such relatable themes of addiction, grief, as well as our innate need for answers in a world where not everything is so clear-cut.  As the story goes, the local sheriff of a small middle-American town investigates a mysterious humming sound that only some of the residents can hear, all while dealing with her own tragic loss. It’s an eerie, supernatural world anchored by an award worthy role for a female lead as the sheriff of this sleepy town, and a cast of memorable characters that are sure to attract top talent.

Joel Mendoza, Chairman of the Fresh Voices Screenplay Competition commented, “Jerome’s voice really leaped from every page in the originality of the premise, through each of these wonderfully drawn characters, and I loved how the dynamic small-town setting became such a suspenseful and intense character itself.  You really felt the palpable anxiety and despair of the townspeople with every turn. This is a well-rounded script with a strong female lead, a haunting mystery at its core, and a twist ending that really surprised me. If M. Night Shyamalan had direct Fargo, this is what I imagine it would be.”

Upon receiving the $3,000 Grand Prize, Mr. Velinsky said, “This is unbelievable. I’ve only been in LA two months, and to receive an award like this really makes me feel like I made the right decision to move here. This is a personal story for me, so to know it resonates with others is a great feeling. Thank you, Fresh Voices, for recognizing my work in this way.”

Having only moved to Los Angeles just two short months ago, it is easy to see that this only the beginning of a long and exciting journey for Jerome.
